WHAT IS TEETH WHITENING?
Professional teeth whitening, or “bleaching,” is used to correct teeth discoloration resulting from stains, chemical damage, smoking, aging or a combination thereof. It is the best complimentary treatment for people with healthy teeth and gums. If your teeth have a yellow tone, this procedure whitens your teeth for a whiter smile. The whitening of teeth is done by releasing oxygen from the whitening gel that we supply. Once the gel is applied to the surface of your teeth, the oxygen penetrates through your tooth enamel, which is generally translucent and then whitens the underlying tissue known as “dentin”.

Dentin is what gives the tooth a certain color that may vary from light yellowish tint to dark gray or even brown when it’s affected by certain conditions. Once oxygen has reached the dentin and made it lighter, your teeth become brighter and reflect more light which gives them a desirable pearly appearance and a “brighter smile.” This procedure is non-invasive and uses no toxic substances. There is no “drilling” or needles involved. Instead we use an intense light to activate the whitening gel in the office or we can simply make you a set of custom trays so you can do the procedure in the comfort of your home.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TEETH WHITENING?
Dentists estimate that about 90% of patients have discolored teeth because of age, smoking or drinking beverages like soda, coffee and tea. This can make your teeth yellow, orange or brown. In such cases a combination of dental cleaning and tooth whitening application may work the best to get just the right tooth color. The tooth whitener agent in the gel we use during will penetrate through enamel of your teeth and make your teeth whiter from within.
Schedule your whitening appointment and if you would like to improve your smile to give your teeth that irresistible pearly look. We will determine the best way to achieve just the right whiter smile. The process will include a thorough evaluation of your current tooth color, and based on your goals, we will make a suggestion whether to proceed with an in-office or take-home system while also determining the best formulation of a whitening gel for your particular case.
HOW DO I GET TEETH WHITENING?
Ask your hygienist during your teeth cleaning or the dentist during your check-up and we will recommend the best option for your whitening treatment. We use the latest whitening techniques, whitening kit, and disposable trays. You can either use our state of the art Light Stimulated Tooth Whitening or your own take home system.
WHAT ARE SOME TEETH WHITENING ALTERNATIVES?
Crowns and veneers are alternatives for patients with severe discolorations (tetracycline teeth) or for more advanced stains as well as for teeth that have undergone root canal procedures, have cracks, fractures or require a change of appearance in shape.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PROFESSIONAL TOOTH WHITENING VS. AN OVER THE COUNTER OR STORE BOUGHT WHITENING KIT?
While many wellness stores and websites offer different tooth whitening kits while claiming the same results as your professional whitening system, the truth is that store bought formulations only permit a low concentration of oxygen releasing agent. Think of it as it is a “food grade” rather than a “pharmaceutical grade.”
The store bought kits have a lower concentration of oxygen releasing whitening gels because the higher concentration applications should only be administered by an expert as part of a professional teeth whitening to avoid tooth sensitivity and gum burns from the chemicals. It is also worth mentioning that that lower concentrations of whitening gels only have limited permeability and therefore are not suitable for more mature individuals.
