WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
A Root canal is a treatment for teeth that are badly decayed and infected. The root canal is a tunnel in the root of the tooth that houses tooth nerve and corresponding blood vessel. Tooth Pulp is a tissue consisting of blood vessels, nerve fibers and tooth specific cells (including stem cells) at the center of the tooth that builds a healthy tooth. The pulp gets infected when there is a deep decay, cracks, chips or some other dental problems.
Symptoms of infection include:
- Swelling
- Visible injury like a crack or chip.
- Sensitivity to temperature.
- Pain in the tooth or gums that can be severe and sharp
WHY DO I NEED A ROOT CANAL?
The pulp in the tooth needs to be removed because it begins to breakdown and bacteria grows in its place which in turn leads to infection or an abscess that could cause irreparable damage. An abscess is a pus pocket that grows at the root of the tooth. Abscesses can cause swelling, bone loss, and infections in the mouth and even beyond. The consequences of dental infection can be life threatening.

What to Expect During Your Root Canal
During endodontic treatment the pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, thoroughly disinfected and sealed. If there is an infection, Dr. Daniyar will medicate the tooth first before sealing it to prevent further damage. Special instruments are used to assist in this procedure that is often done under the microscope. The anatomy of teeth varies depending on where the tooth is located and what its primary function is. That is molar teeth will have 3 or 4 canals and 2 or 3 roots, whereas front teeth would have often have one.
All of those roots have to be identified, cleaned and sealed all the way through. In many cases the root canal may also be used to place a post, which is a dowel utilized to assist in rebuilding a tooth anatomy in cases of severe structural damage. The tooth is then finished with either a filling or most of the time crown restoration depending on the amount of damage the tooth has suffered.
What Happens After Root Canal Treatment?
Once the root canal procedure is completely finished and the tooth is repaired you should not have anymore pain. Minor sensitivity while chewing may be present for some time following the procedure. You should see us for a follow up treatment to place a final restoration such as a dental cosmetic crown to avoid a tooth fracture which in turn may completely negate the result of your root canal treatment. Once all of the recommended treatment modalities have been successfully completed we expect your tooth to serve you for many years to come!
