A denture is a mouth piece (prosthesis) used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissue to provide support for both cheeks and lips. There are two types of dentures. Partial dentures are used when there are still natural teeth present that are used for support and retention. Then there are full dentures that replace all of your teeth.
HOW DO I GET DENTURES?
Dentures take a few appointments to make and fit to you most comfortably. We make impressions of your jaw and teeth so we can fully assess the position of your teeth. Models are made from the measurements and impressions with wax forms and plastic patterns to create the exact shape and position of the denture. We fit the model to your mouth a few times to evaluate the color, shape and placement of your new teeth in your mouth. Once everything passes our rigorous quality requirements and approved by you, we cast the final denture for delivery. We then continue seeing you for regular follow up visits to ensure your comfort and proper functions. Fabrication of dentures is rather a complex process. WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THEM?
Denture teeth can be made of porcelain, plastic or a mix of both, but the base is made of acrylic resin. It can be made to attach to dental implants that will fit the denture more securely in your mouth. Dentures wear out over time, so they will need to be replaced to maintain your normal jawline and support your lips and cheeks. But not only do the dentures wear out, your jaw bone also changes in time. That is why we highly recommend that all our patients with missing natural teeth have an evaluation for dental implants. They are the most advanced way to replace natural teeth or to better support your existing dentures.
WHAT ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES?
Some other options to consider areimplants and bridges because they more closely resemble the feel and function of real teeth.
